Downloading CAN dump using XG37xx device
Raw data file (dump) includes all data, which is presented in a CAN line of particular vehicle.
Below instructions will describe how to download such file from a car using SDK type of devices: StCAN, tacho or XtCAN.
I. Setup Tachograph receiver application.
One of the main parts of CAN bus scanning is Windows OS based application. Xirgo Global tachograph receiver is an application, developed and updated by Xirgo Global team. The application can be downloaded from the following link: Xirgo Global tachograph receiver.
Step 1: Install Xirgo Global tachograph receiver application to dedicated PC.
1.1. The application will launch automatically.
Note. If no company card is connected to PC, the status of app will be displayed as “Fail”. However, it will not interfere downloading of raw file (dump) from CAN.
You do not need to have company card to work with dump downloads.
Step 2: Copy unique address of app.
In this case, the unique address is 4BDEF9F2*tacho.bce.lt.
II. Configuration in XDM configurator.
To get CAN bus data to the Xirgo Global tachograph receiver application, you must configure the setting template by inserting destination address, where file should be sent.
Note. It is recommended to use separate setting template for dump download. Just duplicate the one you use, rename and make adjustments listed below. In order to not create separate template - you can use SMS commands.
Step 3: Set up server address in setting template.
Address, copied in Step 2, should be inserted to ‘Card server address’ and ‘Tacho data server address’ fields under Miscellaneous > Tachograph settings > Tacho file server.
Note. In older setting templates versions, Tachograph settings part is under Connectivity section.
Step 4: In this step, need to configure trigger to start ‘dumping’. Dump can be triggered by SMS command, or special setting template.
a) Triggering dump by SMS.
The best way to write raw data file is when the vehicle is active (driving), so in order to trigger dump by SMS, make sure the vehicle is driving when you are sending SMS command.
Texts of SMS commands:
bestpassword O1 - will trigger standard raw data file download from CAN1 of device (recommended).
bestpassword O2 - will trigger standard raw data file download from CAN2 of device.
bestpassword OA1 - will trigger raw data file download from CAN1 using acknowledgements.
bestpassword OA2 - will trigger raw data file download from CAN2 using acknowledgements.
b) Triggering dump by dedicated template.
Configure CAN line to download dump.
It can be done under Hardware > CAN1 (or CAN2) > CAN function:
Depending on physical connection (orange pair for CAN1, yellow pair for CAN2) configure CAN line, which should be scanned.
Recommended function is “CAN dump read on IN7”. It will trigger dump download when IN7 (increased voltage during engine On) gets active.
Other options are:
”CAN dump read on IN5” - trigger of download is On of IN5 input (recommended for ignition detection);
”CAN dump read on Signal1” - trigger of download is SMS/GPRS command (SMS text: bestpassword S1=1);
Save logic template and assign to SDK device.
Note. During dump download, reading of CAN line will be disabled.
III. Receiving CAN bus data files.
When all the steps above are completed the application scans and downloads CAN data file automatically.
In the settings tab, you can set a destination folder, where dump files will be downloaded.
When the file appears in Info tab, it means that the file has been downloaded.
Note. If size of received file is 1KB - would mean that file is empty. In most cases, it means, that connection point is not correct. Need to verify if connection has no mistakes, or check for other connection point.
IV. Register CAN file for analysis to support.
Registration of file for analysis should be done via Service Desk.
Select section “CAN-bus data” and create a ticket. Describe there the issue and attach dump file.
